Why Evaluating Your Accounting Team Is Key to Financial Clarity

At Gemsbok Consulting, we’re often invited to collaborate with our clients’ existing accounting teams. In many cases, the business already has smart, capable people in place, but even strong teams can lose alignment as the company grows.

Before we can make sound financial recommendations, we first evaluate the foundation: the people behind the numbers.

Step 1: Evaluate Skillsets and Workflows

Every business evolves. The question is whether your accounting team’s skills have evolved with it. We assess each team member’s strengths, workload, and how efficiently tasks flow through the department. Are the right people handling the right responsibilities, or have roles expanded beyond individual capabilities?

Even the most loyal, hardworking employees can find themselves stretched thin or managing tasks that don’t play to their strengths. That’s not a failure; it’s a signal that your business has grown and your structure needs to grow with it.

Step 2: Measure Transparency and Accountability

Healthy accounting teams operate with transparency. Information flows easily across departments, and responsibilities are clearly defined. When that transparency breaks down, you get bottlenecks, finger-pointing, and inconsistent financial data.

We look at what performance metrics are being used, if any, and whether accountability systems exist. Are results tracked? Are deadlines clear? The goal isn’t to assign blame but to create visibility and build a system that supports success.

Step 3: Invest in Training and Mentorship

Sometimes, the issue isn’t structure; it’s support. Many accounting professionals are promoted for their reliability but haven’t been given leadership training or exposure to strategic finance. We identify where your team can benefit from mentoring, skill-building, or fractional CFO oversight.

The Bottom Line

When you understand your team’s true capabilities and align their roles with your company’s growth, you gain more than operational efficiency; you gain clarity.

At Gemsbok, we help organizations of all sizes evaluate, strengthen, and structure their accounting and finance functions so leaders can make confident, informed decisions backed by solid financial insight.

Because when the right people are in the right places, everything else falls into place.
